Thomas Nagel
Notes
Thomas Nagel (born 1937), American philosopher at NYU. "What Is It Like to Be a Bat?" (1974) is the paper that put the subjective character of experience at the centre of the philosophy of mind and is the ancestor of the hard problem. In Mind and Cosmos (2012) he argued that reductive materialism cannot account for consciousness, reason or value, and leaned towards a natural teleology or panpsychism while explicitly rejecting theism; he has written that he does not want there to be a god. He appears here as proof that one can reject reductive naturalism about mind without buying the Argument from Consciousness, and as a careful statement of the intuition I think is mistaken.
