George Berkeley
Notes
George Berkeley (1685–1753), Irish bishop and empiricist who concluded that matter does not exist: to be is to be perceived, and objects persist because God perceives them. Johnson refuted him by kicking a stone, which is not an argument but is satisfying. The founder of subjective idealism, and the reason every later idealist has had to explain why the world keeps going when nobody is looking.
