Thomas Henry Huxley
Notes
Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895), English biologist and comparative anatomist, known as "Darwin's bulldog" for his public defence of evolution, most famously against Bishop Wilberforce at Oxford in 1860. He coined the word "agnostic" in 1869 to describe a method rather than a creed: do not profess certainty about what cannot be demonstrated. He appears here because the word has drifted a long way from what he meant by it, and for his 1874 comparison of consciousness to the steam-whistle on a locomotive, which accompanies the work and contributes nothing to it: the classic statement of epiphenomenalism.
