Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz

Notes

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716), German philosopher, mathematician and co-inventor of the calculus. In the philosophy of mind he is the source of two things that recur in this vault: the pre-established harmony, on which mind and body never interact and merely run in step by God's design, which is dualism confessing that it cannot explain interaction; and the monads, simple substances each of which perceives the universe from its own point of view, which make him the most distinguished ancestor of panpsychism. Also the author of the principle of sufficient reason and of "the best of all possible worlds", for which Voltaire never forgave him.
