Giulio Tononi (born 1960), Italian neuroscientist and psychiatrist at the University of Wisconsin, known for his work on sleep and as the author of Integrated Information Theory, the claim that consciousness is integrated information measured by a quantity he calls phi. The theory entails that anything with non-zero phi has some experience, which makes it the only version of panpsychism with a number attached; Tononi has accepted the consequence that a sufficiently large and simple grid of logic gates would be more conscious than a human. He appears here for having built a theory precise enough to be wrong.
