Harry Houdini

Notes

Harry Houdini (1874–1926), born Erik Weisz in Budapest, Hungarian-born American escapologist and stage magician, the most famous performer of his era. He spent much of the 1920s exposing fraudulent spirit mediums, using his knowledge of stage trickery to reproduce their effects, served on the Scientific American committee that investigated the Boston medium "Margery" (Mina Crandon), and set out his case in A Magician Among the Spirits (1924). The campaign cost him his friendship with Arthur Conan Doyle, a convinced spiritualist, and made him the model for later debunkers such as James Randi; he appears in this vault under Psychics and Mediums.
